About Deadly Dash

It started back in 1976 just after I graduated from college. I headed back north to figure out what I was going to do in the real world. I met up with an old friend Bill and he suggested we go have a pizza. Explaining to him that I could no longer eat pizza because of heartburn all he said was “Trust me”. Bill then proceeded to order a large pepperoni and I just looked at him with that crazed look in my eyes when he came back with “Trust me”. Being a good friend I just went with the flow. Pizza arrived and he covered it with a layer of cayenne hot pepper flakes and again Bill said “Trust me”. After eating 4 slices and not having heartburn I decided that that there was more to this than met the eye.

I began studying and growing hot peppers on a regular basis. I found that hot peppers are an irritant to one’s intestinal lining therefore not allowing the acids to build up in the stomach [note 1,2]. I actually grew up to 20 varieties one summer (hence the photo taken in 1987 at the top of this web page) and ended up drying them because I had so many.

So one day I came home with a pizza , went to the cupboard only to find that I was out of hot pepper flakes. I thought to myself do I dare eat the pizza without hot peppers when it dawned on me that I had all these dried hot peppers in mason jars. I got the blender out and proceeded to make my own cayenne hot pepper shake when I said “dude let’s add some Calaro, Serrano, Habanero, Tabasco and a few other varieties” As I ate the pizza I realized that not only did I not get heartburn but it actually tasted better and the heat was dispersed (spread around the mouth so it didn’t feel as hot).

Low and behold Des’s Deadly Dash was born. [note 3,4]

1. I am not saying that hot peppers will cure heartburn but for most people it prevents it from developing.
2. Also if you have an ulcer do not and I repeat DO NOT eat hot peppers, consult you physician first.
3. Remember hot peppers are a condiment that one should take very seriously. If it is too hot internally use dairy products to help reduce the burning effect, externally use water to rinse the heat away.
4. Remember to handle with caution, keep away from animals and younger children, can cause severe irritation.

Des’s Deadly Dash Classic:
More than 7 varieties of blended hot dried peppers that provide a wonderful flavor while dispersing a heat that if used sparingly is not over powering.
